TACUSPA Presidency – Day 1

Today marked the start of my year-long presidency with the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, more commonly known as TACUSPA. To mark this occasion I’m sharing my remarks from today. Thank you for your support!

2020-2021 President’s Remarks – Dr. Ashley Spicer-Runnels

I’d like to start by thanking Iliana Melendez, 2019-2020 President. Your leadership over the last year, as you’ve managed your personal and professional responsibilities, while keeping the Association functioning, productive, and perhaps most importantly, financially stable, will certainly be remembered and revered.

I’d like to start by expressing my gratitude for this opportunity. Years ago when I joined TACUSPA, I was a new professional that was direct, perpetually curious, and committed to challenging processes I perceived as ineffective or unjust. In many ways I am still that person fourteen years later, although I’ll admit my delivery has gotten better. Every day we encourage students to explore how they can thrive, with integrity, as their most authentic selves, and I believe that we must cultivate spaces where we can encourage each other, as colleagues, to do the same. TACUSPA has provided me that space and I am certain that it will provide that same experience for you, if it has not already. I am also increasingly aware that my involvement with TACUSPA, and the Board specifically, also serve a larger purpose related representation and diversity, as we, like many of our institutions, strive to have leadership that is representative of the people we serve. We all know that it is important, but we must also recognize that it matters and we have work to do in this area.

I won’t inundate you with grand plans about the year to come because I hope our work speaks for itself, but I will share that I am committed to achieving three overarching goals, including enhancing our infrastructure, engaging our constituents, and elevating our purpose. With the new strategic plan as our guide, I am confident that we can continue to build on TACUSPA’s legacy while cultivating synergy through intentional and coordinated efforts that are driven excellence. American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut, Mae Jemison, once said “the future never just happened, it was created” and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Again, I thank you for this opportunity and look forward to a great year.
